Donetsk Weather is typical of that of most of the Ukraine: moderate continental with very cold winters and equally cold summers. Lying in the steppe landscape of Ukraine, surrounded by scattered woodland, hills, rivers, and lakes, its proximity to the sea plays a determining factor in the development of Donetsk Weather patterns. Donetsk also lies in roughly the same latitude as the U.S.-Canadian border, therefore temperatures are accordingly cool.
Winter in Donetsk lasts roughly between October to the middle of April, spring is more a transitional period between winter and summer, effectively covering only the month of May. Summer runs until the end of September and autumn between mid-September to mid-October.
During the long winter season, Donetsk Weather is characterized by dipping temperatures, often falling as low -20 C and even lower in some cases, and by the snow that falls abundantly in the area. The cold weather hovers around until the end of March - beginning if April, when spring finally takes its first tentative steps in proclaiming the reigns. By May weather in Donetsk becomes increasingly warmer heralding the arrival of the summer season.
Although occasionally penetrated either by mini heat waves or thunderstorms followed by sudden intense cloudbursts, Donetsk Weather during summer, is quite pleasant, as humidity levels hardly ever reach excessive levels. Temperatures peak at around the 35 C, although during the occasional heat wave, they are prone to reach highs of 40 C. The time between late September and early October is locally known as ‘Indian Summer’ and is a most spending time indeed, with yellow leaves, small rains, and temperature fluctuating between 20C and 25C.
